About This Service

Ngā Māia Trust is excited to announce a unique opportunity for midwives who have been in practice for over two years and are currently engaged in unfunded clinical coaching arrangements or commonly known as tuakana teina support system to be recognised.

This pilot aims to gather insights from tuakana teina relationships and support the invaluable service provided by current clinical coaching arrangements to better understand the benefit to Māori Midwifery workforce retention.
Eligibility Criteria:

  • Teina: Midwives with over two years of practice
  • Tuākana: Midwives currently providing unfunded clinical coaching to a teina colleague since 1 April 2024 to 30th December 2024

How To Apply

Midwives who meet the eligibility criteria are invited to complete a "Recognise My Tuakana" form. This form will help us identify, record and remunerate the critical work being done by our tuākana and better understand the ongoing workforce needs for retention.

Lisa Kelly

Descends from Ngai Tai and Ngati Pukeko, Lisa has dedicated her midwifery career to reclaiming and revitalising our taonga tuku iho and tuturu birth traditions .  Lisa is the Chair of Nga Maia and is a passionate homebirth midwife  caring for whanau within the Opotiki district and remote east coast.

An experienced midwife of 23 years that has  worked across the scope of midwifery within tertiary, secondary and primary birthing facilities LIsa  holds multiple representation  roles in National forums promoting and advocating strongly for the voice of whanau and kahu pokai .  Her passion has been creating safe spaces enriched with matauranga Maori and embedding this knowledge  into the every day life of whanau which includes  the creation of Kaupapa Maori antenatal and parenting education facilitating   hundreds of wananga across the country.  It is with this matauranga that  Lisa can provide a space for kahu pokai to share, develop and thrive in their mahi in what ever capacity that looks like.

Crete Cherrington

Descends from Ngāti Hine, Ngāpuhi and Ngāti Porou iwi. Crete is the kuia of Ngā Maia. Her wealth of experience and provision of expert knowledge and culturally safe care is the reason she holds the esteemed space she does. Crete considers it an honour to challenge new and innovative ways of learning, such that our whānau experience quality care and service, knowing this creates healing and growth. As a clinical coach for Māori midwives, Crete possesses many attributes including a level of understanding and sound guidance we value from kaumatua.

Jacqueline Martin

Descends from Raukawa, Waikato and Tauranga iwi.  Jacqui has over 20 years working within our profession, primarily in remote rural midwifery.  She is a published author and a kaiako Midwifery at Ara Institution of Canterbury.  Jacqui holds a Postgraduate Diploma in Kaitiakitanga: Bicultural Professional Supervision.  Her desire is to ensure the voices and hearts of midwives are not lost in the profession of midwifery. She is driven to strengthen our workforce through the provision of culturally appropriate professional support. My current role is kaiako Midwifery at Ara Institute of Canterbury.

Tamara Karu
Descends from Ngāti Tamaterā and Ngāti Tara iwi.  Tamara is the General Manager for Ngā Maia, positioned in many national spaces, recognising her as a leader and advocate within the midwifery profession.  As a clinical coach for Māori midwives, Tamara plays a pivotal role in mentoring and supporting other midwives across the country. She is deeply passionate about ensuring that Māori whānau can experience culturally safe pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum care within an equitable health system. She continues to be multifaceted in her approach, to nourish and expand Kahu Pōkai and midwifery to better reflect the whānau we serve.
Victoria Roper
Descends from Ngāti Raukawa ki te Tonga and Ngāti Rarua iwi.  Victoria is the Project Lead at Ngā Maia, leading the redesign of the Graduate Programme.  Her 20 years in the profession has seen her career trajectory centre on emphasising the importance of Māori health equity and culturally appropriate care. Victoria has served in many Midwifery Leadership roles primarily serving the Capital & Coast District.  She is a key advocate for integrating Māori perspectives and practices into midwifery care. Her work is deeply rooted in the belief that all Māori women should have access to equitable and culturally safe maternity care.
