About Clinical Coaching

Ngā Māia continues to provide Clinical Coaching for Kahu Pōkai / Māori Midwives in 2025.  The understanding is that clinical coaching support will lead to improved recruitment and retention.

Ngā Māia Trust is now offering practicing Kahu Pōkai professional support to thrive in their mahi by their own design.  We have the following Clinical Coaches:


  • Victoria Roper

  • Tamara Karu

To engage in free Clinical Coaching, Peer Mentoring or Clinical Practice Support delivered to you in a culturally responsive way, choose from the list of Clinical Coaches provided and register via the link below. The Clinical Coaching can be delivered in negotiation with the Coach and Kahu Pōkai depending on the preference, either kanohi ki te kanohi, phone call or online hui.  All sessions will be strictly confidential*.

*Noting Ngā Māia will provide anonymised quantitative data and themes back to funders as required.

Our Midwifery Clinical Coaches

Tamara Karu
Descends from Ngāti Tamaterā and Ngāti Tara iwi.  Tamara is the General Manager for Ngā Māia, positioned in many national spaces, recognising her as a leader and advocate within the midwifery profession.  As a clinical coach for Māori midwives, Tamara plays a pivotal role in mentoring and supporting other midwives across the country.  She is deeply passionate about ensuring that Māori whānau can experience culturally safe pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum care within an equitable health system. She continues to be multifaceted in her approach, to nourish and expand Kahu Pōkai and midwifery to better reflect the whānau we serve.
Victoria Roper
Descends from Ngāti Raukawa ki te Tonga and Ngāti Rarua iwi.  Victoria is the Project Lead at Ngā Māia, supporting Tūranga Kaupapa Education Programme facilitation.  Her 20 years in the profession has seen her career trajectory centre on emphasising the importance of Māori health equity and culturally appropriate care. Victoria has served in many Midwifery Leadership roles primarily serving the Capital & Coast District.  She is a key advocate for integrating Māori perspectives and practices into midwifery care.  Her work is deeply rooted in the belief that all Māori women should have access to equitable and culturally safe maternity care.
