For many years, the universal maternity services available to all wh?nau have been under significant pressure with little opportunity for change. Increased service and system fragmentation is limiting options for some wh?nau to receive the care that best meets their needs.

We want to enhance what we know is good. Currently, most pregnant people receive continuity of care from a Lead Maternity Carer (often a midwife) that supports their wh?nau through pregnancy and into the parenting journey. We know that a good wh?nau experience of continuity of care leads to better outcomes. However, there continues to be inequitable access to maternity care and disparities in maternal outcomes for M?ori, Pacific, Indian populations, those aged under 20 years, and those living in areas of high deprivation.

We are assembling a Technical Advisory Group (TAG) that will be at the forefront of transforming maternity services in New Zealand. We seek dedicated individuals to fill sixteen roles to oversee the design of a framework that will guide how maternity care is designed and delivered across the motu. A framework that we hope will build services that are flexible, locally responsive, and truly equitable.

Over the next eight months, you will help determine the required components of care that every pregnant person in New Zealand is entitled to and develop Commissioning principles to explain how these services are delivered. These will inform a Maternity Commissioning Framework that will enable regional commissioning of services, to then be tailored to a local context.

We?re seeking innovators from a range of fields:
