Categories

The Te Pitomata Grant Categories for 2025 encompass several key areas. These categories are designed to support M?ori who are studying in healthcare-related fields.  


The three categories supported are:


1.    Rongo? M?ori

2.    Clinical Undergraduate

3.    Clinical Postgraduate



1.      Rongo? M?ori

The Rongo? M?ori category acknowledges the importance of traditional M?ori healing practices in the health sector. Rongo? M?ori, as a holistic and cultural healing practice, plays a significant role in the lives of many wh?nau (families). By supporting ?konga (student) M?ori studying or practicing Rongo? M?ori, the program aims to preserve and promote indigenous healing methods, contributing to culturally responsive care and improved health outcomes for M?ori.

 

Eligibility Criteria

Eligibility criteria for the Rongo? M?ori category:

      be of M?ori descent

      studying or working in the health sector

      enrolled with a rongo? m?ori provider or working under a rongo? m?ori practitioner

      have endorsement from a rongo? m?ori mentor supporting the applicant's practice.



2.    Clinical Undergraduate

The Clinical Undergraduate category targets ?konga M?ori pursuing undergraduate studies in health-related fields. By supporting ?konga at this level of education, the program aims to cultivate a diverse and skilled health workforce at the early stage of their career. This category addresses the need for increased M?ori representation in clinical roles, ensuring culturally competent care helps to address health disparities within M?ori communities.


Eligibility Criteria

Eligibility criteria for the Clinical Undergraduate category:

      be of M?ori descent

      studying or working in the health sector

      enrolled at an approved tertiary provider in New Zealand

      enrolled in a related course at NZQCF Level 7 and above. The subcategories of the clinical undergraduate are medical and dentistry, midwifery, nursing and all qualifications within AHS&T (Allied Health, Scientific & Technical)



3.    Clinical Postgraduate

The Clinical Postgraduate role focuses on supporting ?konga M?ori undertaking postgraduate studies in a health-related discipline. The program aims to enhance the expertise and leadership capabilities of current and future M?ori professionals who will make a difference to front line services for Maori within the health sector. This category supports the development of advanced practitioners, contributing to innovation, evidence-based practice, and supporting the overall improvement of M?ori health outcomes.


Eligibility Criteria

Eligibility criteria for the Clinical Postgraduate category:

      be of M?ori descent

      studying or working in the health sector

      enrolled at an approved tertiary provider in New Zealand

      enrolled in a related course at NZQCF Level 7 and above in a postgraduate program

      Your programme of study must be ?front facing? pathway


Grant Payments

The Grant consists of: 

      $2,000 (up to) per successful Rongo? applicant 

      $5,000 (up to) per successful Clinical Undergraduate and 

      $8,000 (fixed) per successful Clinical Postgraduate applicant  

 

What do I need to have before applying?

1.    Proof of Identity: Birth Certificate, Driver's License, Passport or Kiwi Access Card (18+card).


2.    Proof of whakapapa: Verification is required by an authorised representative from an IWI or Community Organisation who is willing to attest to Whakapapa ie from a R?nanga Office. Kaum?tua, M?ori Trustee or Committee member, M?ori Liaison Officer,

Note: Please ensure you obtain consent from your referee to share their details.  Health New Zealand Te Whatu Ora will only collect, store, and use this information for the purpose of this application only.


3.    Proof of your course enrolment:   Official Letter of acceptance of full and current enrolment into your course of study 

Please note: letters or emails of offer are not valid forms of confirmation of enrolment.




Application Process

All applications must be submitted using the online application form via the applications portal no applications will be received via emails


If you want to complete your application over multiple sessions, you can log back into the portal and continue at any point - your application will save automatically.  

  

Please allow 3-4 weeks after the closing date of 20 March 2025 for applications to be processed and reviewed.  Applicants will be notified of the outcome via email to the address provided in the application.

Successful Applicant?s Obligations

Successful applicants are expected to adhere to all requirements for Te Pitomata Grant.

By applying for a grant, you confirm:


      You are currently enrolled on a full-time course of study for the course you are undertaking.

      All information supplied to support your application is accurate and included in your supporting documents.

      Agree to be contacted by Health NZ for promotional purposes.

      You will notify Health New Zealand |Te Whatu Ora if you withdraw from your chosen course of study; and

      Provide Health New Zealand with your 2025 midyear and end year results.
