Tell us what Ng? Maia Trust Means to you, and why you want to become a Trustee? What are your aspirations for Ng? Maia Trust?
For me Nga Maia is the ahuru mowai of kahu pokai, and is the first manu to form kawawhakaruruhau for M?ori midwives in practice.
My drive to be within this waka as a trustee essentially comes back to my role within education as I know this mahi will inform and whakamana what I can bring to how we nurture and develop our future workforce as currently statistics are still not good enough for our wh?nau. Equally at some point I hope my learnings from within midwifery education will be able to support the development of our first M?ori midwifery school. As by M?ori for M?ori is what we know works.

I have been a midwife for 22 years primarily caring for my whanau, hapu and iwi for the last 20 years. This includes providing Kaupapa M?ori antenatal education or hapu wananga as it is now called since 2006 throughout Aotearoa. I have 4 grown tamariki and 3 mokopuna who all live with my whanau and i here in Opotiki and Torere. I am an active kai mahi at our marae Torere nui a rua, working in the kitchen, on the marae komiti and as of recently transitioning to the pae tapu.
My involvement with Ng? Maia goes back to 1999 in Whangarei, where I met Whaea Crete and was introduced to traditional M?ori birthing taonga tuku iho. I am a passionate homebirth midwife winding down my practice to wh?nau M?ori only and within my rohe. I have been a staunch advocate for wh?nau M?ori within our colonised health system and firmly believe in wh?nau led solutions, to our health inequities. I humbly serve te iwi M?ori, will always fight to protect our birthrights as M?ori and have a never ending commitment to reclaiming our birthing traditions for our mokopuna.
No reira tena koutou tena koutou tena koutou katoa.
What other governance experience do you have?
I have been on the Ng? Maia Board for 3 years, chairing the last 2 years. I have taken on the responsibility of operations for the last 2 years, and the restructure and rebuild of Ng? Maia Trust with support of the Board of Trustees.
I also currently sit on the Board of Trustees for the Ngai Tai Iwi Authority which has been in abeyance for the last 7 years, currently we are settling our deed of Mandate with the Crown. I have a role in the Te Toirawhiti locality plan as an iwi lead and clinical leader, our locality plan is one of the prototypes for Te Whatu Ora localities.
Prior to this I was also the chairperson for Te Kura O Torere for 3 years.
Tell us what Ng? Maia Trust Means to you, and why you want to become a Trustee? What are your aspirations for Ng? Maia Trust?
Ng? Maia is the national representative for M?ori midwifery, tauira and their wh?nau. To me it is a unique trust that has the ability to whakamana kahu p?kai and lead the way towards equitable health care for whanau M?ori. The matauranga amongst our founding members and present members is sacred knowledge that needs to be nurtured and cared for, this is special and unique to tapuhitanga, Maori midwifery, kahu p?kai.
I would like to continue as a trustee to nurture and grow our capabilities and continue to advocate for our wh`anau. The aspirations I have for Ng? Maia are limitless, they are also wh?nau led ensuring we live long and happy lives, steeped in tikanga M?ori and thriving within te ao M?ori.
Which area of the Ng? Maia Strategic Plan would you most like to lead out?
Rangatiratanga - this key strategic priority involves developing and implementing culturally appropriate curriculum and training programmes. A M?ori Midwifery degree embedded in matauranga M?ori, I currently lead this area and have been successful in a programme proposal at Te whare wananga O Awanuiaarangi.
Tiaki wh?nau - to achieve culturally safe care for our whanau through training and promotion of Turanga kaupapa and compulsory cultural safety for recertification of kahu p?kai. This has begun and I would like to see it out by continuing our partnerships with Midwifery Council.

I trained in Australia and have worked with hapu wh?nau since the 1990s. In 2017, my husband and I came home from England. I love being home and working with wh?nau and Kahu Pokai. Currently, I have a casual role as Kahu Pokai in Wairoa.
When I came home, I was surprised and saddened by the near absence of M?ori working in maternity. In particular, Kahu Pokai. Representing my rohe, growing our workforce in a culturally safe environment, working authentically under Te Tiriti, and providing a health service determined by whanau are my Kaupapa. As a Nga Maia trustee, I will advocate these issues be highlighted and addressed with Crown agencies.
I am currently completing my doctoral thesis about Kahu Pokai, centred on the underbelly of midwifery and the education system seeded from colonisation. Reclaiming and resurgence of Kaupapa M?ori birthing practices as determined by Kahu Pokai and wh?nau are also part of the thesis. The thesis journey has influenced by practice and strengthened my commitment to developing different environments for hapu wh?nau and Kahu Pokai. To be unashamedly M?ori, to be free and celebrate our whakapapa and tikanga as our atua and t?puna had envisioned for us.
What other governance experience do you have?
Wellington Maternity Hospital - Governance Board
M?ori Governance for Health Professionals
